2021 Island Art Gallery Spring Show finalist

What an incredible show we have had this year and certainly a tough decision to pick just 3!!  Our judge Maura Kenny, an artist and teacher herself,  did not take this task lightly. She spent much time studying each artist's work as well as how they approached the theme of this year's show, "The Color of Light".   Although each piece is truly a winner, these three pieces really captured her attention:

First Place: "White Azalea", watercolor, by Tina Proctor:
Beautifully rendered, Tina's interpretation of light and shadow involved color, and was a clear response to the task she was asked to do.  Technically nice and well thought out, her color as light against value truly made this piece stand out.

Second Place: "Dock Reflections", oil on canvas,  by Lisa Fawcett:
A nocturnal interpretation of light, the strong use of warm and cool color depicting the sunset's brightness was also a direct answer to the challenge.

Third Place: " "Litchfield Light", oil on canvas, by Micheal Rogan:
A beautiful use of color in the sky and marsh grass truly captured the feeling of an early spring day.  His impressionistic style and soft color palette were a nice response to interpreting "the color of light".

Honorable mention goes to " "Guidelights", colored pencil by Meredith Boos, for her whimsical use of color to created inventive light and "Let the Sun Shine In", acrylic on canvas by Donna Littleton, for her delicate yet technical rendering of a direct light source.

Maura was excited to see the strong representation of many mediums.  Especially from the bold pastel work of Nicole Hendricks, the beautifully precise acrylic work of Barnie Slice, the fun work of mixed media by Cindy Silvers, the beauty of oil by Katherine Wynn Patrick  and the softness of watercolor by Gail Joley.

Please visit us Friday, May 7th from 11 am-5 pm for light refreshments and to see this incredible show! It will hang in the gallery for the entire month of May.   Thank you to all who participated and for supporting the arts in our community!

Food for thought regarding "The Color of Light"  by artist and educator Maura Kenny--this year's judge for our 2021 Spring Show!

The theme of this exhibit has a general and broad reaching title “The Color of Light” leaving it wide open for many interpretations and creative results. It could be taken, literally, technically, figuratively, abstractly, allegorically, metaphorically, or symbolically. Or it can have a very personal meaning from your own life experience.
Technically artists have been responding to light and shadow in their art making for ages. The Impressionists for example leaned heavily on capturing light and atmosphere in their approach to color, color palette, broken brushstroke, optical color mixing, every day subject matter, etc. One of the many lessons one can learn from the impressionists is how they painted white in light. Study Monet’s “Woman with a Parasol” her white dress is painted in a high key tint combination using all three primaries to produce the effect of white in light.
Caravaggio was a master of light within dark using the manipulation of chiaroscuro known as tenebrism to model his subjects and create a dramatic spot light effect on his subject(s) that often relayed a biblical story. His color use was very tonal.
Josef Albers used squares of color like “nesting dolls” in his series of abstract paintings entitled “Homage to the Square” experimenting with: warm, cool, dull, bright, dark, and light colors and components of color to express a variety of qualities and interactions of color and light.
Hans Hoffman was another abstract painter who used color in a way that created space and depth on a flat 2D canvas surface, expressing how cool and dull colors tend to appear to recede into space and bright and warm colors tend to appear to move forward. He created the illusion of 3D space, light and dark on canvas, creating a personal world of color, light and space.
Have fun, learn from the masters or interpret your own use of color in light!
