 Martha Manco Originally from Maryland, I took up painting after I decided to leave the hectic corporate life of management, travel, and deadlines to stay home and raise my two boys. When I was young, I was very involved in photography and did some drawing. But when I was introduced to oil painting, that was it–I was hooked. I worked very hard to understand what it takes to create something that comes from within while maintaining integrity in the processes involved. My style is what I call “painterly realism”. I love to use expressive brushstrokes to represent the energy within a subject. I paint in-person and “plein air” whenever possible to immerse myself and get a strong feel for the atmosphere and space. I am drawn to the challenge of recreating the harmonious range of light, shadow and hues that change moment by moment and day by day. I endeavor to help the viewer feel as though they are there and involved in the story and place of the painting. I usually develop sketches and color studies in addition to taking a lot of photographs to help me retain certain details that might be lost otherwise. The human form is a beautiful landscape to explore on many levels. Through my portraiture, I strive to capture and preserve the character, vitality and emotion that is revealed during specific moments in time. Whether it is through an in person sitting, or a photograph from a special occasion, I am creating an heirloom representation of a person that will last for generations. My paintings have won awards and have been included in juried art exhibitions across the mid-Atlantic and Southeastern US. I participated in a juried portrait paint-off at the Salmagundi Club in NYC, and was commissioned by Harford County, MD to paint a portrait of Coretta Scott King to hang in the County offices. My portraits, beach scenes, florals and landscapes hang in numerous public, academic and private locations across the country. I have lived in the Charlotte area since 2006 and am very involved in Charlotte area artists organizations.  Sharon Bogan
I had always wanted to be able to express myself through art. Although I had never had any formal training, about 10 years ago when I got ready to leave the work world, I decided it was time to follow my dream. After much study and the opportunity to work with great artists, I am where I am today! Having lived in Southern Ohio for most of my life my subjects of choice were barns, old cars and snowy scenes. After moving to Pawleys Island, I have discovered the world of beach life and have tried to incorporate some of the local color in my paintings. I still love barns and rusty cars! As the president of the Georgetown County Watercolor Society, I have the opportunity to promote art in our community. Each of us can benefit from being able to express ourselves through art. My goal at this point is be be more expressive in my art because as you have heard, "Art is the window to a woman's soul." |
